Basically, "presorting" means grouping mail by ZIP Code. All of the pieces going to the same destination get grouped into the same bundle or tray. You'll sort to specific areas, and then work your way up to more general areas.

All leftover mailpieces are combined together. Some beginning mailers choose not to presort their mail; instead, they pay the full First-Class Mail price, put stamps on their mailpieces, and drop them in a collection box.

Note that this tracking service replaces the USPS' older but similar service, Delivery Confirmation, and gives you a point-by-point log of where your package has been, and what's been done with it. When you see that sorting has been completed in USPS tracking, it doesn't necessarily mean that the package delivery has been completed -- it merely means that the organizing and preparing of your package for delivery on a particular mail route has been completed.

When a postal worker does finally deliver the package, you'll most likely see "Delivered" in the USPS tracking log. If, however, the preceding note says "Arrival at Post Office" -- or if a later note says "Out for Delivery" -- then that's a good sign that USPS will deliver your package soon.
